Employment and Housing

There is extensive research that shows that employment and housing play significant roles in helping someone recover from addiction.  Consider the following points:

  • Employment plays a crucial role in addiction treatment, offering structure, purpose, and financial stability.

  • Engaging in meaningful work can significantly enhance the addiction recovery process, providing a sense of accomplishment and contributing to overall well-being.

  • A study found that participants who were assigned to and remained active in an intervention that helped them find a job, keep it, and then find a better job, showed better outcomes in recovery.

  • Employment training during addiction recovery can teach valuable life skills that make reintegration more successful.

  • Stable housing plays a vital role in people’s recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs).

  • An inability to pay rent and the threat of losing housing can lead to stress that triggers substance misuse and relapse.

  • People experiencing homelessness who also have SUDs typically find it difficult to address their substance use without a safe place to live.
